H I E R  #3   A FEW PASTS AND A PRESENT

Frans Willems
May 26- June 3, 2007

Schröderstraße 7, 10115 Berlin

n.T., 2007 - Acrylic on canvas, 30x 24cm

In the project A Few Pasts And A Present Frans Willems expands his painting into the

third and fourth dimension. Based on the fact of an intuitive basic form Frans changes

its illustration on the canvas again and again by using intermediate projections,

duplications, reflections and distortions. This “building-set” alike approach is a

mechanistic and strategic working process. The new forms interfere with each other and

create new space and form arrangements. Surfaces formed by subtle boundaries result

in paintings with cartographic impressions. By means of this exceptional space-logical

approach indefinite locations and landscapes emerge on the canvas.

This technical process of development to create new images of a basic form made us

wonder whether these images could be transferred into a third and fourth dimension by

using an audio-visual medium. In this project Frans expanded his representation, but

without changing his technique.

In the filmed cable contact-wires of a railway line Frans finds his guiding principle that

in the six shown multi-channel video-works gets more and more processed, duplicated

and agitated. Finally a new mechanical visual language emerges from the pure logic of

the intuitive “form” that is condensed and transformed in different chronological velocities.

In the last step of this experiment he gives his art in the also displayed kinetic light

sculpture a momentum of its own and therefore something unpredictable. The image of

a fixed moment of the painting in the early stages resolves entirely into the light

sculpture. Via moving mirrors and the therein projected films of the preceding video

works (see sketch) any moment of inspection is something special and irretrievable.

So the paintings of the Internal Logic-II Series (2005-2006) and the Fold Series (2007)

stand vis-á-vis the new video-works of A Few Pasts And A Present like an orderly

cosmos of significances and orders against an irreversible system and logic.
